6 Greatest New Car Commercials And 10 Evergreens!

I collected some really cool brand new car commercials. I’m sure you know more, so don’t hesitate to add a link of your favorite car commercial in the comment area. Most of them I watched on TV and some are really cool with a great sound and on big screen.

Great Weekend with 3 WordPress Cracks!

Last weekend I had the pleasure to check out the BBQ skills of Frank. Finally, our WP Engineer Team met together. I had a great weekend with Micha, Heiko and Frank. Jan and Robert were our star guest on Friday and Saturday. We had a lot to talk about, even though we probably chat on Skype daily. But with a beer or two, and not just over the net, it was more interesting and fun. We made plans how we could conquer the world. Well, not really, it was more about how good the beer, the shot and the grilled meat taste and what kind of bad luck we have with the weather.

In all cases this was an awesome weekend, away from computer and internet, out of the darkness into the unknown “Outside”! What is that?
Only a pity that the 3 guys live so far away and we cannot do such weekends more often. We also hope that next time, Sergej will also join us. He was sorely missed.

An acquaintance via internet became a real friendship!

Pingdom – Free Account For Website Owners!

For a short time only you can sign up for a free account at Pingdom.

What is Pingdom?

Pingdom informs you via email when your website is down or back again. So you get informed immediately. You can set the time interval to check the website status as you like. But that’s not all, Pingdom has more to offer: Performance Analyse, Response time report, Detailed log, Notification history usw.

Of course, you can also sign up for a Pro-Account, where you get informed even via SMS if your server is down. I used Pingdom a while ago, when it was still in BETA and they offered a free account for one year. I really liked the functionality, but unfortunately after that year, they only had a Pro-Account. So get the chance and sign up for a Free-Account and enjoy.

The account is completely free but you will only be able to monitor one website or server. For your account to be kept alive you will need to log in to the Pingdom control panel at least once every 90 days.
But you can use Pingdom for free and you can get detailed information about your website status.

Lookup HTML Entity Characters – Useful Tool To Have Valide Code!

Using HTML entities is the right way to ensure all the characters on your page are validated. However, often finding the right entity code requires scanning through 250 rows of characters.

This lookup allows you to quickly find the entity based on how it looks, e.g. like the letter c for ©.

The HTML entity lookup is also available as a Dashboard widget. The widget works in the same way the web version does, and does not require an Internet connection to function. Clicking on the particular row will copy the html entity code to the clipboard. I know, there are also other resources, like cheat sheets, code editors which have them implemented. But I think it’s a good alternative to find an entity pretty quickly.

I checked out the very first posts of some popular blogs and put a collection of interesting and fun first posts together. Many blogs started as a hobby and they never would have imagine how successful their blog would become. Other started with the goal to change the world or at least the world of their readership.

Page Speed – New Google Tool To Improve Website Performance

A few days ago, Google published a useful tool to improve your website. Page Speed is an open-source Firefox/Firebug Add-on. Webmasters and web developers can use Page Speed to evaluate the performance of their web pages and get suggestions on how to improve them. It is quite similar to YSlow and you also need the Firefox Add-On Firebug before you install Page Speed in Firefox.

Today is the last time, that I summarize some informational and valuable tips by Darren Rowse, how you can improve your blog significantly.

1. To win new readers, pay attention to them, for example:

Promote a comment of a reader in a future post
Write a post about another blogger
Give readers the oportunity to promote their blog
Start a reader poll and highlight interesting answers in a follow up post
Invite readers for guest posts

Why? Because you can turn occasional readers to loyal readers of your blog. Your reader will feel appreciated and have a better relationship to your blog.

2. Call your readers to action

This is a common problem, passive readers. And it’s not easy to turn them to active readers. Some suggestions how you can involve your readers are shown here.

3. Ask your readers question! What can you expect:

Readers get involved and leave a comment
Readers are coming back more often to your blog, if they left a comment
Posts with a central question can help to find out what you readers like to read about
Answers of you readers can be an infinity resource for other readers
You might get a lot incoming links, if readers are dealing with the question on their page.
Good verbalized question can be a very positive effect for searchengines. Users who have the same question as you had, will probably end up on your blog

Some bloggers are avoiding a „question post“. Because they expect no or just a few answers.

Darren lists 11 tips, to get answers from your readers:

The question should be relevant to your blog
A question regarding to a previous popular post
Ask a question your readers can answer easily and in few words
Ask a question, your readers are also eager to know. Use their curiousity
Suggest your readers some answers
Either/ Or are good questions
Use a poll tool with statistic function
Controverse questions are always good, but be careful, can be dangerous
Add your own answer or opinion to the question or write a follow up post
Ask your readers for their help, they like to help you
Write a follow up post with best answers

4. Help to improve another blog

Every blogger would appreciate if you would help them to improve their blog with your tips and tricks and experiences. They pay you back thousand times. There are many ways to improve another blog:

Write a guest post
Leave an helpful and informational comment
Link to other blogs
Recommend another blog to your readers
Inform the other blogger about helpful Plugins/Hacks for their blog

5. Search for dead links

If you have a blog for a longer time, you probably have some dead links on your website. Dead links have 2 negative aspects:

On one hand, bad links lead your readers to an error page or irrelevant content and you lose the reader
Additionally search engines are not very fond of dead links and you might receive penalties

For WordPress blogs I recommend Broken Link Checker or use www.dead-links.com.

6. Write a review

Reviews are mostly very successful. Many people looking for reviews and experiences about products or services on the internet before the buy it. Here are some ideas for reviews:

Review a book
Movie or TV-show
Review of other websites in your niche
Review about restaurants, if you blog about food
Review about hotels, airlines and touristic places, if you have a travel blog
Review about outfits, fashion and stars what they are wearing
Write your opinion about a political speech, if you have a political blog
Reviews of newest gadget, if you have a tech blog
Review tools and products of your niche
Review about a exhibition or gallery if you write about art on your blog
Review toys if you have a parent blog
Review about music instruments or music if your blog is about music
Review about much, much more…

Tips to write a good review:

Write your opinion, readers don’t need only specs, they also want to know about experiences and opinions of other users
Rate the product/service
Mention positive and negative aspects of the product/service
Use keywords for SEO
Compare products/services
Mention for who this product/service is perfect for or not for
Write in a personal style so people can identify easier them self with your review and your experience
Use photos or even videos
Let the reader know where they can get the product/service for a great price

7. Use analytic programs to find out what your readers are most interested in.

Day 16: Solve a Problem – 7 Ways to Identify Reader Problems

Many times this kind of post is very successful, of course, it depends on the demand of a solution for a certain thing.

7 Methods to Identify Problems to Solve:

Solve your own problem, very often blogger write about their experience how to solve a problem.
Analyze questions from search referrals, what did they search for in search engines so they end up on your website.
Analyze internal searches, check out what the readers particularly searched for on your blog.
Ask your readers for questions.
Look for problems on other sites, like on a forum or blog.
Check in social networks or Twitter for problems.
Just ask your friends and family, surely they will have some interesting or odd questions.

Day 17: Watch a First Time Reader Use Your Blog

A very good tip, I already did this last year, my girlfriend and some friends checked out my website and gave me some interesting suggestions and opinions about this blog.

What you need to do, while he/she is surfing on your blog the first time:

Don’t talk to them while they surfing on your blog.
Watch them how they navigate
Where they click on
What do they read
What do they skip
What areas do they find most interesting

Once they’ve surfed your blog ask them some questions about the experience:

What were their first impressions?
What did they first think your blog was about when they arrived at it?
Was it easy to navigate, read, find and understand?
What did they ‘feel’ when they first arrived at your blog?
What suggestions do they have on how you could improve your blog?
What questions do they have having surfed your blog?
How would they describe your blog?
What are the main things that they remember about your blog 10 minutes later?
What suggestions do they have from a readers perspective?

Day 18: Create a sneeze page

What is a sneeze page?
Pretty easy, if your blog is about “making money online”, “tipps on blogging”, “software tips and tricks”.
Create to every topic a page or post with the best 5 – 10 posts of this specific topic. A very good idea instead of showing only the most popular posts of all topics or the most recent one. With a sneeze page you can lead the reader to a golden page, where he can find the best posts of a specific topic, he is interested in. I really recommend that. Day 19: Write an opinion post.

Why? Posts, which aren’t just about news, which where published on 20 other blogs, but also have a strong opinion of the author, are generating more links from other blogs and more comments. Also you will differ from other bloggers, positive or negative, depends. But at least you don’t write about the same thing, like “WordPress 2.8 is out” as many other do. Day 20: Write comments on other blogs.

A really basic task, every blogger should know and do. It generates link juice because some readers might go to your website to check out who is behind this person with this opinion or comment. Tag 21: Reanimate old posts

It’s always good to update and improve old posts. You will be surprised, but sometimes an old post can have a great comeback or become an Evergreen.

Reasons, why old post could be improved:

You rushed the initial writing of the post and was poorly written
Your post lacked depth in some way
Because the information is now dated
You’ve changed your opinion on what you wrote
A key element in the post (like the title, formatting or opening lines) was poorly done
You were wrong with your post and it contains factual errors
Because you know more now about the topic than you did when you first wrote it and you can provide better information and details
